1615 Washington Avenue
Built 1966-67 for Alvin Von Kennedy and Natalie Shirley Williams Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy (1914 – 1986) was a social worker with the Veterans Administration. Mrs. Kennedy ( – 2002) worked as a teacher, first at Myers Street School when this house was built, and later in the 1970s at Eastover Elementary.
The Kennedys’ daughter Natalie Kennedy Beard now lives in the house. Like her parents, she is an active member of First United Presbyterian Church in Charlotte’s center city. She serves as Clerk of Session, the chief lay leader at the church. Ms. Beard also is President of the McCrorey Heights Neighborhood Association in the 2010s.
Architecture
Ranch house, one-story, light brown brick. Main gable-roofed block extends to create a small front porch. Secondary gable-roofed wing holds kitchen/family room/garage. Smaller gabled wing at rear. Except for replacement of double front door with a single door, the exterior is virtually unchanged since originally constructed. Located on a large corner lot facing Washington Avenue at the corner of Creek Street. H.W. Carriker was the contractor, who also built several other houses in McCrorey Heights.
